We all have such busy lives. We are a technological society and while this has so many advantages (you are reading this on the web!), we do not have much down time. Doesn’t it feel sometimes like we are always DOING something?
Most of us have smartphones and are connected to every constantly ringing bell and tone. We have so many clients that have difficulty sleeping (if this is you, download our free Insomnia Relief Recipe!). Insomnia is so common today and because of this, we are tired and need help staying focused.
Focusing at work with essential oils
There are some great essential oils to choose from to help you stay focused and feel clearer in the mind. Most of you may automatically think of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) but here are some others that you might consider:
- Spanish Sage (Salvia lavandulaefolia)
- Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)
- Spearmint (Mentha spicata)
- Lemon Ironbark (Eucalyptus staigeriana
- Helichrysum (Helichrysum gymnocephalum)
- Laurel Leaf (Laurus nobilis)
Any of these oils alone or in combination in a diffuser or nasal inhaler improve focus, concentration and mental acuity. Several of these essential oils (specifically salvias) contain chemical components which inhibit cholinesterase and thereby improve cognitive function. Most people are familiar the use of Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis ct 1,8 cineole) and its use with Alzheimer’s patients.
How aromatherapy keeps you focused
A good thing to keep in mind is that we are talking about aromatherapy. Whatever essential oils are chosen, we must find their aromas pleasant. Many of the studies we found discuss the correlation between cognition (the mental action or process of acquiring knowledge and understanding through thought, experience, and the senses) and mood. When our brains are sharp and clear, we feel better and vice versa.
The blend that we use has to make us feel good in order for it to work. It has been shown repeatedly that when something is appealing to our senses (including our sense of smell) that there are even greater results.
Using hydrosols for focus
Lastly, keep in mind that hydrosols can be used quite effectively to help us stay alert and focused. I always have my spray bottle of Mint Medley or Rosemary nearby. Try a spritz of hydrosol in the afternoon (when our energy and mental levels can begin to dip) instead of a cup of coffee. Or try both! You can put a teaspoon of Chocolate Mint essential water in your cup of coffee for a fabulous uplift and amazing flavor!
