Delve deep into using essential oils, extracts, hydrosols, herbs as remedies to heal your pets — and yourself. Develop an understanding of the chemistry behind the healing, and experience distillation first-hand.

Zoopharmacognosy is a behavior in which non-human animals in the wild instinctively self-medicate by selecting and ingesting or topically applying plants, soils, insects, and psychoactive drugs to prevent or reduce the harmful effects of pathogens and toxins and heal themselves.

Applied Zoopharmacognosy was founded by Caroline Ingraham in 1984. Ingraham is the leading expert in this field of animal self-medication. In this class, you will learn by tapping into and enabling your animals’ (aka fur babies’) self healing by offering “remedies.” The remedies are plant extracts containing the exact same or similar constituents that the animals could find and forage in their natural habitat.

This is giving the power back to the animal, trusting that the animal knows what is best for itself. The remedies that are offered for choice are of a great variety of plant extracts such as  essential oils, absolutes, co2 extracts, herbs, plant extracts, macerated and fixed oils, clays, algae, seaweeds and minerals. The animal selects the remedy and then decides how to dose itself.  So, the animal will choose to inhale it, take it orally, or by rubbing a body part into it. Or all three!

Aroma-chemistry Gateway Workshop

When using essential oils and extracts as remedies you are targeting the physical body of the animal. It is imperative that you know the chemical families and essential oil components.  This is direct aromatherapy, working with cell receptors, influencing inflammatory mediators, engaging the body through an essential oil’s antioxidant, anti-microbial, or anti-fungal properties.

When you are working at the cellular level, affecting the internal systems of an animal, your knowledge must be exact and your awareness acute. The animal will lead you to the essential oil therapies it needs; it is your job as a healer to know the chemistry of the plants, their healing effects, proper applications, and interactions.

Distillation Gateway Workshop

Walk among the powerful red rocks of Sedona and connect with the healing life-force of local plants as you handpick pinyon pine, ponderosa pine, Utah juniper, Rocky Mountain juniper, snakeweed, and rosemary for essential oil distillation. Experience and learn the process of steam distillation, hydro distillation, and hydro/steam co-distillation.

We’ll delve into the chemical signatures, plant morphology, and therapeutic and energetic aspects of essential oils and hydrosols as they apply to your pet (and you). Discover why why one plant may be more effective for your pet than another, even though they have the same chemistry. Work with copper alembic stills as well as a glass still, and go home with handmade hydrosols.

Quick Facts

Zoo’ (animal), ‘pharma’ (remedy) and ‘cognosy’ (knowing) = Zoopharmacognosy. The Animal and Human Gateway Workshops are designed to enable you to work safely and effectively with your own animals. This specialized training of applied zoopharmacognosy involves learning to “read” an animal’s response to plant secondary metabolites and minerals. Emphasis is placed on both the practical and scientific elements of the subject in the workshops.

The Aroma-chemistry gateway workshop is designed to enable you to understand the ten chemical families and components associated with essential oils and extracts. It will also help you understand the pharmacokinetics and pharmacology of the components of essential oils and extracts.

The Distillation gateway workshop is designed to immerse you in the plants and trees and take part in harvesting in the Wilderness of Sedona and distilling botanicals. It is an intimate glimpse into the magic of why essential oils, extracts and hydrosols are such powerful and effective remedies.
